Climb the
Matterhorn
by the Hörnligrat.

4,478 meters, and the most recognizable mountain on earth. A two-day private program from Zermatt — one preparation day, one night at the hut, and a 04:00 start for the summit cross. One guest per guide, always.

The mountain

Not a climb
you improvise

The Hörnligrat is 1,200 meters of continuous ridge — loose rock, route-finding at every pitch, and a summit day that has to be done fast enough to be back before the afternoon. It is climbed one guest to one guide for a reason: on that terrain, a rope of three is a rope that turns around. The preparation day exists for the same reason. I need to see how you move before we commit, and you need a day on Zermatt rock before the one that counts.

The program

Two days,
one summit

Day one tells us whether day two happens. Day two starts in the dark and is over by early afternoon.

1
Preparation day — Riffelhorn or Breithorn ½ Traverse
Two things happen on this day. We get to know each other, and I work out honestly whether the summit day is within your reach — so you hear it from me on the Riffelhorn rather than at 4,000 m. And we drill the specific techniques the Hörnligrat demands: moving on fixed ropes, crampons on rock, short-roping. These are the skills the ridge asks for, and they are much easier to learn here than up there. CHF 800.
2
Up to the Hörnlihütte · 3,260 m
You walk up to the hut in the afternoon. We meet there at 18:00 for dinner and the briefing — the plan for the morning, the timings, and what happens if the mountain says no.
3
Summit day — 04:00 departure
Out of the hut in the dark and straight onto the ridge. Up the Hörnligrat past the Solvay hut, the fixed ropes of the shoulder, and onto the final snow slopes to the summit cross at 4,478 m. Around eight hours up and down.
4
Down to Zermatt
Back to the Hörnlihütte, then down to Schwarzsee and the valley.

CHF 1,750guide fee · summit day

Plus CHF 800 for the preparation day. The figures below are the costs that are not included, so you can see the real total before you ask.

Not included. Hörnlihütte overnight, around CHF 150 per person — and as is standard in the Alps, you also cover the guide's night, so budget for two · Schwarzsee cable car, around CHF 44 · Rental technical gear, CHF 50–70 · Valley accommodation, travel and insurance.
Level required. Previous mountain experience, and the cardio to climb 700 m of ascent per hour and sustain 8 to 9 hours of effort. You must be sure-footed, free from vertigo, and comfortable climbing rock up to grade IV — with and without crampons.

Before you book

Common
questions

What does it really cost to climb the Matterhorn?
CHF 1,750 for the summit day and CHF 800 for the preparation day, both guide fees, one guest per guide. On top of that: the Hörnlihütte at around CHF 150 per person, counted twice because you also cover your guide's night — that is the norm across the Alps and it catches people out, so I say it up front. Then about CHF 44 for the Schwarzsee cable car and CHF 50–70 if you need to rent technical gear. I would rather you see the whole figure here than discover it later.
What level do I need to climb the Matterhorn?
Previous mountain experience, and the cardio to climb 700 meters of ascent per hour and keep going for eight to nine hours. On the technical side: sure-footed, free from vertigo, and able to climb rock up to grade IV, with and without crampons. If you are not sure whether you are there yet, write to me and describe what you have climbed — that answer is free and it is better than booking and finding out.
Why can't I skip the preparation day?
It does two jobs. It is where we meet and where I can tell you honestly whether you have the level for the summit day — much better to hear that on the Riffelhorn than halfway up the ridge. And it is where we drill what the Hörnligrat actually demands: fixed ropes, crampons on rock, short-roping. Guides who skip it are selling you a start, not a summit.
What happens if conditions are bad?
We do not go, or we turn around. The Hörnligrat is unforgiving of bad weather and of being slow, and the decision is mine. Build a spare day into your trip if you can — it is the single thing that most improves your odds of standing on top.
When is the season?
Mid July to mid September, when the ridge is usually clear of snow and the Hörnlihütte is open. Dates at either end of that window depend entirely on the year.
Is there a tradition I should know about?
Yes, and it is a good one. Here the day traditionally ends with the client buying the guide a drink or a meal once you are back down. It is not part of the price and nobody will ever ask you for it — but it is how most good days end, and it is usually when the day finally gets talked through properly.
